Are you the proud owner of a new natural latex mattress? If so, you can congratulate yourself on a life-enhancing experience of better quality sleep. In addition to enjoying the comfort and relaxation of your new mattress, you are probably wondering how to maintain it in its best condition over the life time.
Fortunately, natural latex mattresses requires minimal maintenance since it is one of the most resilient natural materials having high performance, durability and resistance to ensure long-lasting comfort and support for your body.
There are some tips to consider to keep your latex mattress in pristine condition and extending its lifespan.
1. Rotate and/or flip your mattress every 6 months.
A handy tip for all mattresses to keeping it in good condition – provided that they have the same structure and density on both sides.
Some mattresses are a single slab with consistent density meaning you can sleep on both sides and get the same comfort and support. This gives it the advantage of being able to rotate and flip ensuring body pressure is spread evenly throughout the mattress, over its life time. Also, it feels even more comfortable to you with a seemingly new and fresh sleep experience on every flip!
Other mattresses have many layers of different foam, or made of springs on one side. This means you CANNOT flip them, and are therefore more prone to sagging on one side.
2. Use a mattress protector or bed linen
It is recommended that you purchase and use a mattress protector or bed sheets. Make sure the material are made of light natural fibres and has a low-thread count to ensure adequate protection and air circulation for your natural latex mattress.
In the worse case scenario, if your mattress cover is damaged or spoiled we can offer replaceable mattress cover.
3. Cleaning up spills
If a large spill occurs, use a clean, absorbable cloth to bloat out the moisture or wet area. Alternatively, suck up the moisture with a wet/dry vacuum. Follow with heat from a blow dryer or fan. Never expose natural latex, without a cover, in direct sunlight as it will cause it to dry out and biodegrade.
You can rest in the knowledge that our ZAANTA mattresses have a hand-stitched, non-removable inner cover.
4. Ensure your bed slats are not spaced too far apart.
Natural latex mattresses are preferably placed on slatted beds as a foundation to promote breathability and flexibility. Ensure the slats are about 5-8cm (2-3″), depending on the firmness you want.
Avoid placing slats too far apart as it will cause the mattress to feel soft and sink in between the gaps. Also, if the slats are too close together, it may make the mattress feel firm.
Thats all there is to it to owning a natural latex mattress. So, the five key things to remember are: rotate or flip your mattress every 6 months, always use a cleanable mattress protector/bed linen, do gentle spot cleaning if necessary, avoid uncovered exposure to direct sunlight, and ensure slats are positioned correctly.
If you follow these instruction, this gives you more time to maximise the the comfort and luxury of your new latex mattress over its life span.
