How Lack of Sleep Can Affect Your Emotions

It is very important to get about eight hours of sleep each night. Some people require a little bit more, while some people can function quite well on a little less. Trying to get through the day on just a few hours of sleep can be quite a challenge. Not only does lack of sleep affect your ability to focus, but it can also affect your emotions.

Irritability and Anger

A person may be very calm and collected on an average day. But when they’re tired, they can quickly become very irritable and have angry outbursts. Essentially, they seem like a different person. However, a full night of sleep can prevent these negative emotions from happening. Even if you know you’re tired and cranky, you might still be feeling the effects of not getting enough sleep. With increased irritability and anger, you’re more likely to engage in aggressive behavior, engage in the dangers of road rage, lose your patience with others, or say things you wouldn’t otherwise say.

Sadness

People who are tired can commonly feel a lot more sad than usual. There’s just something about feeling tired that makes a person sluggish and overly emotional. Hormones play a big part in this situation. If you allow this sadness to persist day after day because of lack of sleep, this can lead to depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and other symptoms. It’s wise to find ways to wind down at night in order to sleep well.

Foggy Thinking

When you’re well-rested, you probably feel like you can take just about anything on. Your brain is working as it should, you’re making good decisions, and you’re very productive. When that fatigue starts to creep in, you probably feel like giving up for the day. Foggy thinking can affect your work productivity, your relationships and your ability to get things done at home. It’s tempting to try to compensate for lack of sleep by drinking coffee, but that’s a short-term fix that can ultimately make sleep problems worse.

Everyone is bound to have a night here and there when they can’t sleep well. There are a number of things that can contribute to poor sleep. If you’ve had a stressful day, if something is worrying you or you aren’t feeling very good, you could end up feeling pretty tired the next day. Shoot for a solid night of sleep if you can. You’ll feel your best the next day.
