Why you need to wash your sheets regularly (and what happens if you don’t!)

Do you know who you are going to bed with? Dust-mites, bedbugs and other microscopic life live in between the sheets. If you can’t remember the last time you washed your bed sheets, listen up.

Scientific studies conduct by experts urged people to wash their bedsheets, duvet covers, pillow cases and other bedding at least once a week to avoid illness.

Even if your a clean freak, you will be surprised that we lose 500 million skin cells every night. Even more staggering – human’s produce almost 100 litres in bed, every year making it a perfect environment for bacteria. Not only is there sweat and skin cells – there is also commonly animal dander, food crumbs, pollen, soil, dust, bodily fluids, and dust mite droppings.

The microscopic life can build up over time within bed clothes and, eventually, make people sick.

It only takes 1 week of build up for it to get out of hand causing health issues such:

  • Skin irritations and rashes from bed bug bites.
  • Allergies (i.e. sneeze, sniffle and scratchy throat) – if you never washed your pillow, it can harbor mold, yeast and bacteria which can be inhaled as you sleep.
  • Serious cases – infected wounds and athlete’s foot.

What’s the solution? Just follow these steps to properly get rid of the nasties lurking in your bed.

Knowing the right way to wash, dry, and store your bed’s components is essential to creating a soothing sleep environment. Here are some tips to washing your sheets:

  • Run your sheets through awarm cycle (at least 60°C) to kill off living organisms.
  • Ball your sheets up when you put them in the washer. This will prevent them from stretching out and losing shape.
  • Wash printed and coloured sheets/pillowcases inside out to protect the colour.
  • Tumble dry sheets according to label instructions, and remove them before they’re fully dry to help minimise wrinkles.
  • To avoid mildew growth, make sure sheets are dry before storing them.
  • Ensure you have a couple of spare sheets/covers to rotate, as frequent washing will break down even high-quality sheets/covers.

Additionally tips: don’t neglect your mattress!

  • Invest in a topper pad to provide a layer of protection and comfort, and also helps  your mattress last longer
  • Use a steam mop on your mattress to kill any dust-mites/bedbugs and vacuum the debris
  • Refreshen your mattress by sprinkling some baking soda and then vacuum afterwards to remove odours.

Remember, the bed is where you begin and end the day, and where you spend nearly a third of your life. So why not make it the cleanest, loveliest, and most comfortable spot in your home?
